The Missing Piece: How Liverpool’s Lack of High-Volume Ball-Winners is Impacting the Team

Stefan Bajčetić

Liverpool’s season has been marked by inconsistency and underperformance, leading many fans and experts to question what has gone wrong for the reigning Premier League champions. One factor that has come under scrutiny is the team’s midfield, which has been criticized for its lack of high-volume ball-winners.

The solution to Liverpool’s struggles this season can be found in the midfield, and that bringing in a player like Bajcetic, who has been impressive as an 18-year-old, could provide the missing piece for the team. A midfield revamp, with Bajcetic playing alongside Fabinho, with Henderson in the same midfield should ensure a sense of security. These are the type of midfield profiles that would provide the necessary balance for the team’s more vertical style of play.

The proposed midfield would particularly suit Gakpo, who would be able to play in a hybrid role and drift in between the lines, which is crucial for the team’s approach. The importance of Bajcetic’s impact on unlocking the potential of other players, such as Nunez and Salah, who have struggled to find their form this season, was apparent against Everton.

Analysts caution that simply changing the team’s formation may not be enough to address the issues Liverpool has faced this season. Everton’s pressing on the wings has not been as effective against Liverpool as it was against Arsenal, and that this has allowed Liverpool to advance the ball forward more easily.

In conclusion, analysts argue that a midfield revamp could provide Liverpool with the missing piece to address their struggles this season and get back to their winning ways. With the right combination of players, Liverpool’s midfield could become a dominant force once again and help the team return to their position as one of the top teams in the Premier League.

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
