Nkunku out of the World Cup after colliding with Camavinga!

  • The Leipzig striker has been forced to pull out of France national team's training camp due to a knee injury

The defending world champions, France, and one of the favorites for the World Cup in Qatar, suffered another big casualty today.

Christopher Nkunku was injured after colliding with Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga in a duel for the ball in the final part of the training session under the rain in Clairefontaine. Hours later, the French Federation announced the RB Leipzig striker's withdrawal from the World Cup due to a sprained left knee.

As a result of the impact, Nkunku was unable to resume the match and was forced to leave the field of play limping and showing signs of pain. Tests carried out after the incident ruled out his presence at the World Cup in Qatar.

Nkunku is set to be replaced by Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt. France will also defend the title without other top stars on the injury list - N'Golo Kanté, Paul Pogba, Presnel Kimpembe, and Mike Maignan.

Nkunku was one of the fittest forwards in Deschamps' squad, having reached the Bundesliga break, being his top scorer with 12 goals.

His great performance has been key for Leipzig. The Bundesliga team set off to a not so impressive start but turned things around and climbed to third place in the table and qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League by finishing second in their group behind Real Madrid. They defeated The Spanish giants at home 3-2. Nkunku scored one of his three Champions League goals for 'Die Roten Bullen' in that match against Real Madrid.

Deschamps' headaches don't end here. Talisman striker, Karim Benzema could only train for 15 minutes on the pitch before he left to do gym work. He didn't train with the group or with the ball. Tomorrow the French team will travel to Qatar.

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
