Riqui Puig could win the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award in just 10 matches

 



Riqui Puig has had a flying start since his summer move to the MLS. LA Galaxy jumped into the play-off spots with a 4-1 win over Colorado as the former Barcelona playmaker clocked in 3 three assists. 

According to Opta Jose, Puig became the first LA Galaxy player to record three assists in an MLS match since Landon Donovan in 2014. After his three-assists, the Spaniard's tally has now produced five assists in his first six MLS starts. The most recent La Galaxy player to accomplish this feat was David Beckham in 2008.

The MLS Newcomer of the Year Award is awarded by Major League Soccer to a player who has professional experience in another league and has an outstanding season in his first season of play in MLS.

LAFC forward Cristian “Chicho” Arango was named the 2021 MLS Newcomer of the Year.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic of LA Galaxy won the award in 2018. Wayne Rooney of D.C. United and Carlos Vela of LAFC were finalists that year.

Newcastle United starter Miguel Almirón, at the time playing for Atlanta United won the award in 2017.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba was a finalist in 2015. Thierry Henry (Arsenal, Barcelona) was a finalist in 2010.
