Getting the sack? Not so fast. Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has spoken about the pressure he is under

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard spoke about the pressure he is under ahead of their match against Southampton. The former Liverpool captain said managers like Mikel Arteta and Ralph Hasenhüttl prove that some Premier League teams need to stick by their manager through bad moments.

Gerrard replaced Dean Smith at the helm of the Midlands outfit last November following a successful spell in charge of Glasgow giants Rangers where he led them to the Scottish Premiership title.

Villa were only outside the relegation zone on goal difference after picking up just four points from their opening six Premier League encounters. A win against Southampton in their latest match has give them three points and a jump to 13th in the Premier League table. That has taken some of the pressure off Gerrard, but the results have to be consistent.

Gerrard was unable to dramatically enhance Villa's results and performances during his first six months in the dugout, guiding them to an underwhelming 14th place finish last season.

Villa then went on a a 60 million pound spending spree in the summer.

Gerrard would “love to see” a Premier League All-Star game introduced into English football as suggested by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly which is being received by much skepticism on this side of the Atlantic.

Where it went wrong for Three Lions against France in the World Cup and is manager Southgate the right man to lead England to the Euros 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
