Bayern Munich vs Barcelona: Xavi Hernandez’s pre-match press conference

Xavi: "Tomorrow's result will not affect anything. We won't let that decide the course of our season."

"We have improved a lot since we lost last season to Bayern. We have a competitive team and I think we can win tomorrow and break the history of what is happening here. Tomorrow is only a 3-point game, and it doesn't matter much whether we win or lose."

Xavi on the congested match calendar because of the World Cup

"We have analyzed and planned everything about our match calendar, before and after the international break. There will be no stops, then there will be the World Cup."

"After the end of the World Cup, we have to go through a small preparatory period. We've already planned for the whole season."

Barcelona have only defeated Bayern in two of the last 13 matches!

Xavi: "We are talking about Bayern Munich. This is football. It is true that we only won two matches, and we did not win here. We know how tough the challenge is but I think we can do it. We'll see what happens tomorrow."

Xavi on Nagelsmann and Bayern’s tactics

"Bayern started the season well in the league and in the Champions League, and Nagelsmann is a great coach. Tactically he's great, and tomorrow it's going to be a tough match. They press really well, and are great in many ways."

"I think both teams will want to keep the ball, they want to press, and we both leave spaces in defense and suffer when we don't get the ball. It's going to be a tough match, and it could get even more intense."

Is this the right time for Lewandowski to play against Bayern?

Xavi: "Lewandowski is fine, he is calm and confident. He is a natural leader of the team, and this match is special for him. But I think we are in the right time to face Bayern. But the result will not mean anything."

Do you know what tomorrow's lineup is?

Xavi: "Unless there are any surprises or injuries, I already know the 11 players who will start."

"Raphinha is an important player for us, very dynamic and helps in defense as well. He's an amazing player, and I trust him a lot. Tomorrow, too, he will undoubtedly be important to us."

Xavi on Thomas Muller

"Muller scored 8 goals in 7 games against Barca, is there a special plan for him? Müller is a great player, a Bayern player for many years and understands the game well both offensively and defensively. Therefore, it is difficult to defend against a player like Müller."

"We have Lewandowski who is an important player for us, but we have other players as well. He's a player who is good at finding open spaces, and he helps us really well. But we also have other players in attack who can help us."

Xavi: "Here at Barca we have to show our abilities in every game. The press always talks about every match that it's a "moment of truth". But this is true in a match like Bayern. Last season was not good for us and we hope to compete better tomorrow."

Xavi: "Looking at the previous matches we played, we had a bad time. But tomorrow we want to compete well. If the players show their true potential, I will be happy. We have to leave the past behind and believe in our ability to win."

Xavi on Musiala and Davies

"Musiala and Davies are two players who have already made their mark in Bayern. They also have great strikers, and they press really well. It's true that we're pushing too, but they've been doing this for years."

What changed from the last time you played against Bayern?

"There are a lot of things. But I think the mentality has changed. We always talk after games, and I always say we are here, Barcelona. We have to show our character, and show what we are capable of on the field."

Xavi: "We can lose the game but we have to impose our style."

Xavi: "We train hard for two hours or more. This is what I love as a coach. Tomorrow we want to compete and show that we are excited to play in this tournament."

"Tomorrow I will choose the players who are the most ready, the best on the field, and who are able to impose our style on the field. Experience is not important, there are young players who are more physically fit. It's all about performance during trainings."

Where it went wrong for Three Lions against France in the World Cup and is manager Southgate the right man to lead England to the Euros 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
