Bayern Munich vs Barcelona: Julian Nagelsmann's pre-match press conference

Of course I know Barcelona well. They made several good signings like Lewy and are a completely different team that the one we faced the last 3-4 times.

Nagelsmann on Gavi and Pedri

"They are aggressive & defend high, with midfielders like Gavi & Pedri. I expect a tough game tomorrow."

Nagelsmann on the lineup

"A lot of positions are already decided. Lucas will start, I don't know yet who's going to play next to him. Upa has had more games with Lewy and always defended well against him. But I haven't made a decision on that yet."

"Sabi will start alongside Josh. Regarding Leon, we decided that he would the full 90 minutes against Stuttgart. He feels the strain, so it would be too early for him to start again tomorrow. Sabi is important defensively and I'm happy he's in good form."

Nagelsmann on Sadio Mané

"He's self critical, maybe a bit too critical at times. He needs to be even more self-confident and not think too much. I am not critical of his performances and still looking forward to him exploding here. In principle, I'm happy with him."

Nagelsmann on Lewandowski

"If I see him tomorrow, I will shake his hand. I'd be happy if our fans welcomed him well. That's normal when someone has given so much for the club. That's how things should be. He was an important part of the Bayern family. I wish him the best."

"I don't know if Lewy is their most dangerous player, but I'm sure he's their biggest goal threat. Lewy has good presence and makes good runs. But if he doesn't get the ball, it will be difficult for him to score. Barcelona also have other dangerous players."

Where it went wrong for Three Lions against France in the World Cup and is manager Southgate the right man to lead England to the Euros 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
