The negotiations with Pique and Busquets to generate financial 'fair play' has been put on 'standby'
- The negotiation with the captains to generate financial 'fair play' is on 'standby' and Barça sees the sale of players as more viable now
- The contacts are not broken but they are stopped; it depends on whether Barça presents different formulas
- The club does not accept exit clauses because La Liga would force them to provision everything in a single year
Meetings were expected between the agents of Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and FC Barcelona yesterday. However, they've been put on 'standby' for now as Barça think that the most viable option today to generate financial margin is through the sale of other players according to MD.
Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay, Aubameyang and Sergino Dest are on the market, although only the Dutch striker's departure to Juventus looks the most likely at the moment.
Negotiations with the two captains of the team were started to register Jules Koundé immediately but there were some disagreements at the end of last week. The representatives of the players and Barca have not spoken since. Postures are distant.
Piqué and Busquets did not hesitate to try to help the club but as of now their stance is that they have already made a great effort to help the club.
With Busquets, the club proposed a contract extension for one or even two seasons in order to defer his salary. However, the midfielder plans to retire from European club football in June 2023 and go to the MLS, where he hopes to join Messi.
It is not entirely certain but it is a scenario that he contemplates. His agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, in the recent meeting proposed the inclusion of a clause that would allow him to be released within a year even if Barca extend his contract.
That approach works contrary to the interests of Barca as La Liga would then force Barca to provision and compute all the deferred payments in a single year, which would in turn eat up the available financial margin. They plan to look for other formulas.
It would be the fourth cut and in his case, as in Piqué's, the LaLiga control committee is keeping an eye on these developments as they could be considered financial fudging of the numbers.
Piqué's case is also complex, essentially because he's already taken a significant cut that he agreed to last season. The center-back helped in the registration of Memphis and Eric Garcia.
Pique, represented by Arturo Canales, has demanded payment guarantees from the club, which the club has declined at the moment.
