Pep Guardiola Compares Messi and Haaland

  • I was lucky as a coach to be with Messi and if he scored two, he wanted three. If he scored three, he wanted four. If he scored four, he wanted five. Great scorers are never satisfied.

Erling Haaland made his Premier League debut as expected at Manchester City, scoring a brace to beat West Ham after failing to score in the Community Shield against Liverpool.

Despite the fact that many players would dream to have a start like this, the Norwegian wasn't so happy. At the post-match press conference when asked about the hat trick he didn't achieve, he said, "I was able to score before being substituted. A bit of shit, but it is what it is."

Later, when Pep Guardiola was about that precise moment in which Haaland was frustrated for not scoring another goal, the Catalan coach took the opportunity to make a comparison with Leo Messi. "I like him. I was lucky as a coach to be with Messi and if he scored two, he wanted three. If he scored three, he wanted four. If he scored four, he wanted five. Great scorers are never satisfied. They are always hungry," Guardiola confessed.

Speaking of Haaland 's ambition, who made his scoring debut with a penalty, Pep explained that "I think if someone else had picked up the ball[to take a penalty], someone would have been hit in the face. I'm pretty sure and that's a good sign."

"A week ago he was not going to adapt to the Premier League and now he is the best along with Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo," Guardiola quipped, noting that "he is a guy with incredible talent, a goalscorer. They are numbers, so we would like to add something more to his game to be a better player, not just a guy who scores goals."
