Key Points
- Barça, Chelsea and the player's agents will meet today to determine if it is possible to carry out the transfer operation
- The agreement between clubs is very far away, but Barça does not rule out anything given the London club's interest
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appears to be closing in on a surprise switch to Chelsea, but Christian Pulisic has reportedly decided against making a Stamford Bridge exit.
Aubameyang's future at Barça is uncertain, although the Blaugrana admit that his departure is going to be complicated because the agreement between both clubs seems distant. Both Barcelona and Chelsea are trying to avoid a situation where they go into the last week of the transfer market with this uncertainty. A meeting between representatives of Barca and Chelsea is planned to explore the options of agreement.
Chelsea has agreed personal terms with the footballer's environment, convincing him of a departure from Barça. Stamford Bridge has guaranteed Auba a three-year contract for a crack salary. The financial effort to the player is great, but the offer to Barça is disappointing.
The Blaugrana club does not need to sell and it is an unwanted loss as indicated by Xavi and the technical staff. Barça value Aubameyang at 25 million euros and does not want to include any footballer in a swap operation.
The departure of Aubameyang would be a setback for Xavi Hernández if the departure of Memphis is also confirmed, since the Barca manager would then be left with little squad depth in the striker position.
The Blaugrana's are studying signing a '9' with a letter of freedom or on loan. According to Sport, Barcelona do not consider giving Martin Braithwaite the opportunity to play that position.
Chelsea have made a strong start to the season under Thomas Tuchel - but time is running out for the Blues chief to rebuild his depleted squad. If the deal goes through, Aubameyang can copy Cristiano Ronaldo tactic to get dream Chelsea number. Aubameyang is known to prefer the No 17 shirt. The Gabon international wore the number at Borussia Dortmund and this summer changed from 25 to 17 at Barcelona.
The number is currently occupied at Stamford Bridge by new signing Raheem Sterling. The England international was unable to take his usual No 7 due to N’Golo Kante wearing the digit. Ten and 11, numbers which Sterling has worn for England, were also taken upon his arrival.
11 has since been relinquished as Timo Werner has left to join RB Leipzig. Auba can ask Chelsea to deploy the Ronaldo tactic - apply to the Premier League for special dispensation to change a player's squad number.
