Uruguay legend Luis Suarez made his second debut for his boyhood club Nacional on Tuesday, 17 years after he first featured for the South American club. Suarez, 35, was subbed on in the 75th minute replacing Franco Fagundez.
The 30,000 fans inside the Gran Parque Central stadium in Montevideo gave him a standing ovation. Nacional were trailing by a goal and late into the last 10 minutes Suarez got a chance from a dangerous freekick, right outside the box. The free-kick was blocked by the wall as Nacional put on the burners in their bid to equalize in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarter-final against the Brazilians.
Goianiense had held onto the lead since the 23rd minute through a Luiz Fernando header. The former Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid player has signed a short-term contract with the intent to playing regular football ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, which begins on November 21. His contract includes 16 guaranteed starts leading up to the World Cup, which will be El Pistolero's fourth. At international level, Suárez is Uruguay's all-time leading goalscorer with 64 in 123 matches.
