- The center-back met with Laporta last week and 'offered to play for free' so that his contract would not be a problem to comply with the LaLiga Fair-Play.
Like last season, Gerard Piqué took a wage cut(or deferral) so that FC Barcelona could register Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay hours before Barcelona started their La Liga campaign at the Camp Nou against Real Sociedad, this year he wants to repeat history.
This week, Piqué will alter the conditions of his contract, wages will be significantly reduced, but not as much as the player has offered.
Gerard was -and is- aware that today he is the fifth center-back in the pecking order and that he starts at a disadvantage compared to his teammates, but he's not giving up. Piqué is convinced that he will end up being an important player for Barcelona this season.
At a dinner with Joan Laporta last week, alongside his agent, Arturo Canales, Pique put the absolute modification of his contract in the hands of the club.
According to AS, 'Pique is willing to play for free, something Laporta missed from Leo Messi when a year ago the president negotiated the continuity of the Argentine player, now in Paris Saint-Germain.'
Barcelona did not accept Piqué's offer to play for free, but his new salary will depend on the needs of the club in order to register the newly signed players and the renewed ones such as Dembélé and Sergi Roberto.
Piqué's contract is one of the contracts the current Barcelona board alleges could be irregular after Bartomeu renewed him, De Jong, Lenglet and Ter Stegen in October 2020.
These four players agreed to lower their salary in exchange for extending their contracts and facilitating the amortization of their signings. Out of the four, Piqué was the only one who did not earn more money in the seasons that extended his commitment to the club.
Pique has 'become a bullet in the chamber for a board that works against the clock to be able to free up chips, lower the wage bill and be in a position to register players.'
Like Pique, Barca captain Sergio Busquets, who met with the club's sports leadership on Monday, is also negotiating a drop in salary that could be accompanied by a renewal for another year.
