According to 'The Athletic' FC Barcelona under Bartomeu's management in 2020 requested UEFA for a loan to receive money in advance from future Champions League revenue. This was to offset losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
UEFA's response was negative considering that Barça was not guaranteed a presence in future editions of the competition. According to the report, the rejection surprised Barça, but no further details are known regarding the financial amounts.
The Athletic also echoes a publication that appears in the book by the British writer Simon Kuper, a club worker who tried to bribe a UEFA official to investigate possible breaches of financial fair play by European competitors such as Manchester City and PSG.
An offer that came during a meal held in February 2020, also from the previous board.
