THE MIDFIELD OPTIONS XAVI HAS IF FRENKIE DE JONG LEAVES BARCELONA

Key Points

  • With Sergio Busquets and Pedri as undisputed starters, Xavi has several options for the other interior position
  • De Jong's future will mark everything, especially if Barcelona's
delicate economic situation makes it impossible to bet on Bernardo Silva

What options will Xavi have to replace De Jong in the starting eleven if the Dutchman leaves and Barça don't sign a replacement? Sergio Busquets and Pedri are unquestionable starters, so there is only one midfield position left to occupy.

Gavi and Franck Kessie are the players most likely to occupy the remaining interior position, but there are more possibilities. Sergi Roberto, recently renewed for a season, should also be an alternative.

Roberto, however will only be able to play in his natural position if Barca signs another right back right-backs. Right now, Xavi only has Sergiño Dest and Ronald Araujo as an emergency resource, since he doesn't have Òscar Mingueza.

Nico González, in principle, will stay to rest Sergio Busquets and try to become his generational replacement. In Olot, in the first game of the 2022/23 preseason, the Galician performed well.

There are other young alternatives too. Another one of the names is Pablo Torre. The Cantabrian, with the '16' on his back, starred in a really exciting debut. The club has also hinted that he'll be in the dynamics of the first team, but he will be a Barca Atletic player.

But the advice is, don't rush him. Do not rush and draw comparisons with Pedri.

With Riqui Puig on the exit ramp, the last option is that of Álex Collado.

Collado, the one from Sabadell will find it difficult to have minutes as a forward, as the competition with Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres, Dembélé and Raphinha will be fierce. The youngster will have more opportunities in midfield if Frenkie de Jong is transferred to United.

The signing of Bernardo Silva is extremely complicated.

Where it went wrong for Three Lions against France in the World Cup and is manager Southgate the right man to lead England to the Euros 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
