Manchester United could be looking at a Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek reunion

Manchester United’s midfield promises to have a very different look following the departures of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata. The quartet’s contracts expire at the end of the season paving the way for Erik ten Hag to embed new talent within his squad.

_____

A target of much criticism, reshaping United’s midfield is the top priority this summer. With concerns raised about Scott McTominay and Fred’s roles in the double pivot, The Red Devils are keen to add a more adventurous midfielder to their ranks, with Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong having been identified as their leading target to solve that particular problem.

 _____

United are understood to be weighing up a big-money offer for the Dutchman. He worked with Ten Hag at Ajax and the United chief is understood to be keen on being reunited with him.

_____

United’s pursuit of creativity in the center of the fied doesn’t end there. If United are successful in their efforts, it will see De Jong reunited with former Ajax team-mate Donny van de Beek. The duo were instrumental together in Amsterdam and each played key roles in helping the Dutch giants reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

_____

The formation Ten Hag is most likely to use is the 4-2-3-1 he was using at Ajax. That could see De Jong deployed in a double pivot in front of the back four, with Van de Beek lending support. Van de Beek could push up into the No.10 position and replace Fernandes, with Ten Hag likely to rotate his pack at different junctures throughout the season. De Jong could then be joined by McTominay, Garner or Fred in the double pivot, although United need a new and improved defensive-midfielder.

_____

Although Van de Beek hasn’t proven himself much in the Premier League, he scored ten goals and grabbed 11 assists in his last season as an Ajax player, so if anyone knows how to get him hitting similar numbers again it is Ten Hag.

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
