BARCELONA TURN DOWN 70 MILLION EURO MAN UTD BID FOR FRENKIE DE JONG

Manchester United have made an opening proposal for Frenkie de Jong after talks started June 1. €60m plus €10m add-ons as per Fabrizio Romano.

"Barcelona have turned down this opening bid - but clubs remain in contact.
De Jong has never indicated his desire to anyone. He’s still waiting."

Financial struggles are preventing Barcelona from making progress in their sporting planning ahead of next season. To do so, they need to finalise the deals to sell part of their TV rights and Barca Licensing Merchandising (BLM), as well as cashing in on a player to make space in their salary cap.

For this reason, Barcelona seem to be willing to offload Frenkie de Jong, with Manchester United being determined to land the Netherlands international.

The Dutchman, who is one of the highest paid players in the squad, has been reluctant to leave Catalonia as his dream was to play for the Blaugrana, where he believes that he can improve under Xavi.

Yet, Manchester United's insistence, Erik ten Hag's interest in him and the pressure that Barcelona could put on their player could make him change his mind.

Second most expensive transfer

Should Barcelona clinch a deal to sell De Jong to Manchester United, his sale will become the second most expensive transfer in the club's history after that of Neymar. Paris Saint-Germain triggered his 222m euro release clause in 2017.

Barcelona offloaded Arthur to Juventus in exchange for 72m euros plus 10m euros in variables, but Miralem Pjanic was included in the deal as a makeweight, which means that the club made 12m euros plus five in bonuses.

In the past, Luis Figo had joined Real Madrid for 60m euros, while Paulinho departed Barcelona for 50m euros.

England manager Gareth Southgate against France in the World Cup 2022 quarter-final Southgate has allowed a new generation of England fans to dream. His accomplishments should not be downplayed or ignored. But England can't quite get over the hill when it counts. As was evident last night, and Italy in the final of the Euros, England struggle to turn that firm grip on the game into chances and goals. Deschamps's men were not better than England's. They just had that vital 1 per cent that carried them through. Winners win football matches. England had a better xG. England (2.59) 1-2 (1.32) France. Sure 2 of the chance were penalties which boosted the xG for England, but then its the tiny margins that can decide a World Cup knockout game. Both sides were taking out their opponents strengths, but then their own strength was not coming into play. England were creating chances, but never ones you thought had to be goals. Kyle Walker was stuck blunting Mbappe, and the same was ...
